Why ballplayers need entitlement & a sense of belonging.

This game is so emotional it’s crazy. As ballplayers, we need a high level of belief about our abilities.

This belief is the foundation for high performance on the field and in the batter’s box.

That is why I enjoy working with young ballplayers. I get to teach the youth about principles that make self-actualized individuals.

When I think of a player with a HIGH level of self-belief I think about Jose Altuve. He’s in many ways an anomaly.

Jose Altuve has had to overcome the limiting beliefs of people that have accessed his project-ability. His size –  I’m sure has been a challenge. It’s very rare to see players with his physical make-up, make it as far as he has.

I would consider him a pioneer and a legitimate role-model for smaller ballplayers.

The only way he’s been able to transcend these challenges is by stepping on the field with a belief that he belongs there. Period. He tells himself a positive story about who he is…

…that he is just as good as the players he’s competing against.

This is important and for most players, the master key in reaching and accessing hidden potential that can take their level of playing to a whole new level.

I had a conversation about this with a baseball parent recently. Here is what else I have to say about this very important topic.

Enjoy!

Not hitting? Blame the baseball!

Not Hitting? Blame The Baseball!

As you know, sometimes the solution to a problem can be quiet counterintuitive.

Sometimes the answer is the EXACT opposite to the solution that we initially proposed in our mind!

For example, if a young ballplayer is struggling during batting practice, the logical response from a parent or coach would be as follows:

“Concentrate!”

“Try harder!”

“Apply more effort”

“Take it more seriously”

Here is what I’ve noticed while giving private bat speed lessons.

To a young player, concentrating harder to them, means squinting their eyes, gritting their teeth, tightening their grip and puckering up.

Like their parents, they’re are unaware that the process of concentration first begins with letting go and yielding to the flow of the process.

This is very important.

How do I get young kids to do this?

EASY PEASY!!

I get them to reframe how they’re perceiving the practice and their performance.

The trick is to make things fun with ZERO RISK! (Key phrase.)

A child’s mind is spontaneous so my hitting lessons have to follow suite.

I’ll show exactly how I approach doing this in this video!

Enjoy!

Simplify. Simplify. Simplify…Like Miguel Cabrera!

If I could take a pill and wake-up to having one major leaguer’s hitting ability…it would be Miguel Cabrera’s.

A couple of years ago, he won the Triple Crown.

Hadn’t been done in over 50 years prior.

Simply put. He’s amazing. What’s interesting about his approach to hitting though is that everything is simple.

When he hits the ball, he demonstrates slow feet, quick hands with minimal head movement.

Text book…yet unique to his own physical make-up.

He’s a BIG boy. So he swings to get an extra base hit. Not to simply put the ball in play. He knows his role. He knows what he gets paid for. And he shows up for work doing just that.

What are some things about Miguel Cabrera’s swing that you enjoy watching the most?

What was ONE take away that you received from this “swing analysis break down”?

Let me know in the comment section at this post.

How to get your player to listen to your hitting advice!

” Mark you gotta help me. My son doesn’t listen to me when I try to give him hitting advice. What should I do?”

That is a question that I get a lot. Probably the most prevalent just behind, “ what size bat is best for my son?” and “should he be playing baseball year around?”.

With that being said, here’s my OFFICIAL response to how I think parents and coaches should approach establishing themselves as a reliable source for advice.

Here’s a hint: It starts with building trust, rapport and a humble level of authority.

Who would of thought?!

Baseball is fun. It becomes even more fun however when a family is supporting the ballplayer’s development through and through.

Hope this helps!

What have been your experiences?

Have you had trouble communicating with your ballplayer? What has been some of the biggest obstacles with your child/player’s development? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
