I’m reflecting on a phone conversation I had the other day with an x-team mate of mine who was on the way home from the airport after finishing his minor league season. The minor league season finished not to long ago, and if you don’t know, a professional season is an absolute grind. I asked him how he felt, and he said, “tired”.
As we finished the conversation, after asking what he thought of his progress and performance of this recent season, he replied,” I did okay….but I wish I would of smiled more!”
I was quite for a moment, allowing his words to sink in. “Smiled More”????
Then it hit me. As baseball players, we focus so much on results, stats, expectations, and the future. All of this robs us of what’s really important. The present moment. It’s only in the present moment, that we can use our instincts to make the right adjustment’s.It’s in the present moment that we can utilize gratitude to remind us of how lucky we are for being able to play this game. When we are in the present moment, we are focused, relaxed, and ready for any obstacle. When we remember to be present, we are content.
When we are content, we smile.
