It’s 2009. I’m training with the Padres, taking ground balls during batting practice. The player I’m training with asks me, ” Hey, have you ever heard of this guy named Jose Altuve?”

Nope, I replied. Doesn’t ring a bell.

“Well he’s supposedly the Astros’ number one prospect, and he’s only about 5″5 a buck 60.”

“Oh yeah? Good for him.” I was thinking to myself. I just wanted to get through this workout in one piece

Little did I know that a few years later, Jose Altuve would be leading the league in hitting while making web gems in the all-star game.

He’s a true athlete and a PERFECT example that you DO NOT have to be BIG to play this game.

For all of you players who have been told, that you need to play small ball since you’re small, watch this video over and over and over again until this idea sinks in…

…being a good ballplayer is about knowing how to play this game the right way.

Not about having a “GOOD baseball body”.

Fewer and fewer scouts are impressed by a projectable body these days as they are by players who have baseball instinct. It will behoove you to embrace this idea whether you’re big or small.

I hope you enjoy this video.

I think you need to clarify one thing in your video, head movement. His head moves forward quite a bit, as do all great hitters as they transfer weight. You can draw a circle around the head or a line on the video and see how much it moves between finished load and contact. However, it doesn’t move up and down or back and forth. That’s what will disrupt the contact point or mess with depth perception. But if you keep the head perfectly still, your spine becomes a still axis and you will have a purely rotational swing with little power and range, squishing the bug if you will. The weight has to transfer into the front side to allow you to pull into the rotational part to get the bat on plane, allow consistent solid contact, and optimize power.
