How to overcome self-doubt at the plate!

It happens to EVERY ballplayer who takes the field attempting to give it their all.

They walk up to the plate, dig into the batter’s box and try to put a good swing on a pitch that they can handle…

…all while trying to control and overcome one of the BIGGEST obstacles known to ballplayers.

SELF-DOUBT.

Self-doubt robs us of our ability to think strategically about an at-bat and keeps us from progressing the way we do when we’re enjoying the process.

Self-doubt keeps us from reaching our personal peak performance.

But not to worry – it happens to every ballplayer.

The great ones you hear about are the ones who know how to overcome it by demonstrating a few key principles.

In this video I’ll discuss how I teach these principles with my players on a daily and weekly basis.

My Biggest self doubt situation in baseball is when My varsity team was playing our cross town rivals. Their Ace pitcher who got Drafted and who now attends a D1 school for baseball. Negative thoughts were spreading all across the dugout. My team could not stop talking about his 90 MPH fastball. I began to doubt that I could compete with him. How I overcame that doubt and was able to succeed was by just having a simple approach when I stepped up to the plate. I saw that he was throwing away to a lot of hitters, so my approach was to get an outside pitch and hit it the other way. “see a pitch, and hit the pitch”. I ended up going 2-3 off of the stud and it felt really good that a simple approach helped me compete against such a dominant pitcher. My teammates always tell me I hit better off good pitchers and I never understood why I do that, but now I do. I always simplify the game when I face dominant pitching. Now Ill bring that approach with me every pitch, and every at bat. I will have a specific plan as you said in the video. It’s now enough to just focus, you need to know what you’re trying to do up there as a hitter.

Sure I will! So much has happened since the 7 months I posted that video! Right now I’m a freshmam at Saginaw Valley state university in Michigan. It’s a Division 2 school and I love it. It’s amazing how far I’ve came, I went from batting .227 my freshman year of high school to college baseball! How I got recrutied is an awsome story too. In a normal summer game at MSU the head coach of the school I am at now came to watch one of his commited pitchers. I was sad that day because I did terrible in the game before and I wasnt commited to play ball anywhere. I didn’t think i was good enough to play college ball. So I relized i had nothing to lose, knowing the coach was there I hit a double for my first hit off of his commited pitcher, then i stole third. Impressed with that, the head coach of saginaw introduced himself to my mom, as he was talking to my mom a blasted a homerun into right center. and here i am now, my dream is to get drafted so that i can have a chance to play in the mlb. I will do whatever it takes to get drafted because I love this game so much!

I always go over everything such as my hands, my stance, and my stride. I overcome it by just saying in my head and thinking about all the great hits I’ve had. I use that as. Origami on and and example of how to succeed at the plate.
